Let’s talk starships! Finally!

I’ve just put up a page with a lot of info about the basics of starships. You will definitely want to check this out, as it’s by far the largest information release on starships we’ve done so far.

More info on them is coming, including shots of space and ships flying around!

So our ships will come with a sexbot bar?
Can we opt for courtesans and water instead?
Can we replace the gym with a pool?
I notice there’s a galley. Is that so we can ‘land’ over water and row or sail our way around water planets?
Can we replace it with an art gallery?
Instead of a bridge, can we have a river?
Can we have crew nickels or dollars instead of crew quarters?

I’m sorry just what the hell is a “sexbot bar”

Will ships require a certain quantity of crew to properly man? Perhaps each function of a ship might require a certain degree of crew management? I am unfamiliar with achaean ships or lusternian aetherships, and these were used as examples. What happens if a ship is undermanned? Can AI be used to replace the requirement for some crew?

As they have rooms in them, it seems clear that you can walk around the ships. Can you do so while a ship is in motion? What about combat? What does combat look like on board a ship? Are you walking from room to room putting out fires and repairing hull breaches, like in the rogue-like game FTL? Or are you running combat on a more macro level, controlling a ship as if it were some singular gargantuan entity, a single unit?

Yep, you can walk around while a ship is in motion. Combat’s on a macro level, controlling the ship as one big entity. Ships don’t require any crew beyond its captain!

Are there any thoughts on the possibility of larger ships piloted by multiple people in the future, whether it’s a maybe, firm no, or not quite answerable just yet?

The trouble is that we’d never want to give ships piloted by multiple people an inherent advantage over ships piloted by one. MUDs don’t have large enough populations to insist on group play. What we may do is let people split up functions on a ship, but there wouldn’t be any mechanical advantage to that, just one of having more attention directed at combat (which can get pretty hairy with everything you can control simultaneously).
